Nick’s wallet is forty-eight dollars lighter, his shoulder is killing him, but he is smiling.

So is Lindsey, walking through the county fair beside him, the huge teddy bear that she’d fallen in love with securely wrapped in her arms.

On his other side is Catherine, her hand entwined with his, a wary smile on her face. “You didn’t have to do that,” she chides, and he laughs, using his non-throwing arm to pull Lindsey closer to him, because he likes the feeling of being part of their family.

In fact, he loves it, and he wants more of it.
