A Surprising Morning

Fandom:CSI/NYPD Blue crossover
Notes: For the LiveJournal CSReports "Anything about Sara" challenge

It's morning in New York, and Warrick is ready for work. He's still confused though, because he didn't get any answers from Sara last night about what the story with her and this Tony Rodriguez guy is. He's hoping that morning will make her more talkative; last night, when he asked her if she wanted to get some dinner, she'd just shrugged, giving him an apologetic smile. "I kinda have plans," she'd said, and he'd let it go at that, waving her off with a quip about her leaving him alone in the big bad city.

He hasn't seen her since she left with Rodriguez, hears no movement in her room now, so he knocks at the adjoining door, calling her name. When there's no response, he tries again, this time trying the handle, surprised when it turns easily. He's pretty sure that Sara's the type who would have triple checked something like that, just like he's sure she's not the type to stay out all night.

Yet there's her bed, not slept in.

Frowning, he grabs his cell, dials her number, but she doesn't answer. The voice is one he recognises though, from the station house yesterday. "Sara Sidle's phone," Rodriguez says, and Warrick hesitates before continuing.

"Is Sara there?" he asks. "It's Warrick."

"Hang on." There's a pause, during which the signal fluctuates, so the phone is moving, and Rodriguez says, "She's just in the shower…" He stops talking when Sara's voice is audible to them both, telling them both that she's there, and Warrick hears Tony's amused voice telling her, "It's Warrick."

"Hey Warrick." He expects her to be embarrassed, uptight, but she's not. She sounds just like she always does, even if Warrick feels as if the world's not quite at rights.

"Sara." He draws out her name. "You ok? Because I checked your room … I thought you might want to get breakfast … "

She clears her throat, has the grace to sound apologetic. "Yeah, I kinda crashed at Tony's last night," she says, and he's frankly amazed to get that much out of her. "I'll see you at the station in about-" She pauses, and he hears Rodriguez's voice in the background before she finishes. "-An hour?"

"See you then." He keeps it simple, but an hour later, when she walks into the precinct in the same clothes she was wearing the day before, hair curling around her shoulders, a broad smile on her face, he doesn't know what to make of this side of Sara. Nor does he miss the semi-amused, semi-curious looks of Connie and Clark who are talking to him, who don't seem to be used to seeing their Lieutenant like this either.

"What do you make of that?" Clark asks him, and he shrugs.

"Your guess is as good as mine."

"Investigate one mystery," Connie murmurs. "Find another." She's not wrong, but from the look on her face, Warrick's sure that this is one mystery she's intent on solving.
