A Night In
It's strange, Sara decides, being in the Fifteenth Precinct, having heard so much about it from Tony. She recognises some of the faces, from her visit in May last year, but brief glimpses in a hospital room don't have the same impact as talking with people, as actually seeing the infamous Sipowicz "charm" in person.
She knows Tony had to know that she was coming, is surprised when she doesn't see him in the coffee room. She's not surprised in the least when he makes his grand entrance though, with a well-placed line designed to amuse her and confuse everyone else. It does its job perfectly, and order is resumed from sheer shock if nothing else. She doesn't miss Warrick's curious glances, just like she doesn't miss how he lingers at the door when Tony calls her back. "You got plans for dinner?" he asks, and she forgets about Warrick, and where they are, and reacts instinctively.
"You tell me," she replies, and he laughs.
"Meet me at end of shift?" he says, and she agrees, walking out of the room and picking up Warrick on the way, going to the crime lab to see the evidence for themselves. She expects him to bombard her with questions, but the only one she gets is a invitation for dinner, and she has to decline. He makes a joke about it, but she knows he's watching, knows they all are, when she and Tony walk out of the precinct.
Once they're in his car though, in his house, figuring out what they're going to cook for dinner, they forget about all that, falling straight into their usual easy conversation.
She enquires after his health, he accuses her of sounding like his mother.
He asks about her life in Vegas, specifically her love life; she accuses him of sounding like her father.
He asks about her family; she tells him they still haven't spoken in years.
She asks about his and gets chapter and verse, finds that his mother asks after her all the time.
She tells him about May, about how his mother insisted she stay with her, telling her she was family.
He laughs, reminds her that he'd told her once that his mother wanted to adopt her, says that he's going to call up, ask if Sara can come for dinner.
She groans, asks for notice so that she won't eat for the entire day beforehand.
They never run out of conversation, only stopping when they look at the clock, realise how late it is. It's too late to go back to the hotel he decides, and she's too tired to argue, so he shows her to his spare room, hands her a shirt to sleep in, kisses her cheek before going to his own bed.
As a rule, she doesn't sleep much, but she sleeps soundly tonight.
