Silver Lining

Fandom:CSI/NYPD Blue crossover
Notes: For the LiveJournal CSReports "Anything about Sara" challenge

They talk over lunch, Rita and Connie on one side of the booth, Warrick and Sara on the other. They've made good headway today, feel good about stopping for food. They talk, about the case, talk generally about New York and Vegas, but Warrick's not surprised when Connie asks the question that's been on everyone's mind.

"Look Sara, you can tell me to mind my own … but that was you … in May last year?"

"At the hospital? Yeah."

Warrick vaguely remembers Sara taking off for a while, lets Connie continue with, "So you guys are … ?"

Warrick's curious too, just wouldn't have asked, well aware that Sara guards her privacy jealously. He's fine with letting Connie do the dirty work though, wants to shush Rita when she says, "You don't have to-"

"It's fine," Sara says, surprising them all. "Tony's wife used to work with my brother."

Warrick's eyes widen, his "You have a brother?" overlapping with Connie's, "Rodriguez has a wife?"

Sara's eyes dart between them, a sad smile on her face. "Had," she says. "They're both gone now. Angela and Tony divorced years ago … she died last year, Mike when I was a college senior. That's when we met."

"I'm sorry." Rita's face is lined in sympathy and she touches Sara's arm briefly. "Was it sudden?"

"Drug overdose," Sara says, looking heavenward. "Tony was the one who called me … broke the news." She shakes her head. "I was pretty broken up … and he did everything for me. Picked me up at JFK, put me up in their spare room, made arrangements … I never asked him to, he just stepped up. He's … he's something else."

It's by far the longest speech Warrick's ever heard Sara make, contains more information than he's ever known about her, but it doesn't answer his question. Connie must agree, for she's in full detective mode, asking pointedly "So that's why you came in together this morning?"

Sara's cheeks flush, but her gaze never falters. "We had dinner at his place," she says. "Got talking, lost track of time." She looks at each of them steadily, as if trying to convince them of her sincerity. "He still has a spare room."

Connie's not letting it go. "You mean-?"

"We're not like that," Sara interrupts, and though Connie's mouth opens, she keeps going. "I met Tony on the worst day of my life. And I was so far out of it … I didn't know what to do, where to go. He did. He got me through that … and he's been in my life ever since." She shrugs. "There's not a day I don't wish things were different," she says, and Warrick hears her fight for control. "But from a bad situation? Tony's my silver lining."

Questions answered, Warrick changes the subject, but he still wonders - is that all there really is to it, or are there more surprises still to come.
