Sara’s getting used to the second and third, and sometimes even fourth glances that follow her and Warrick around these days. She thought it would bother her more; in point of fact, she was terrified of people’s reactions, but that was before, and this is after, and now, she’s just quite amused by it.

“You’d think they never heard of two CSIs dating before,” she says to Warrick as they drive home from work one day, and he laughs that laugh of his, the one that raises goosebumps on her arms, the one that makes her pulse race, makes her heart beat that little bit faster.

“But it’s us,” he says, reaching over from the steering wheel to lay a hand on her knee. “That makes it different.”

She tilts her head curiously, asks a question that she already knows the answer to. “Why?”

He takes his eyes off the road long enough to look at her, one eyebrow raised, but it’s amusement, not irritation, or worry, or any other emotion that shows on his face, dances through his eyes. “You’ve spent the last five years in love with Grissom,” he reminds her, but it’s not said unkindly, just as a matter of fact. He could be talking about the weather. “You don’t think people are going to be surprised that you ended up with me?”

She shrugs, reaches out to cover his hand with hers, before taking it off her knee, wrapping it in both her hands. His fingers flex against her skin, strong and warm, sending a spurt of longing shooting through her, and she damns the ten minutes it’s going to take to get them home.

“Things change,” is all she says, and his reply is an almost silent chuckle, a breath of air escaping his lips.

“Yeah,” he says, as they come upon the most conveniently placed red light in the history of red lights, giving him the opportunity to lean over, brush his lips across hers. He doesn’t say anything else, just smiles at her, and she knows that’s Warrick-speak for “And I’m glad they have.”

She smiles, squeezes his hand, and relaxes as he starts driving again, Sara-speak for “Me too,” and they travel in silence the rest of the way home.
