Adam’s told you so much about it that you feel as if you really were there.

As if the dry Egyptian air really was parching your throat, as if the slight breeze was blowing sand into your eyes, making them red and watery and gritty.

As if the view in front of you was the Great Pyramid, as if the slant of the setting sun behind it was hurting your eyes.

As if Adam is sitting on the desert sands behind you, holding you in his strong arms, whispering in your ears tales of the Pharaohs and the Gods, that accent sending chills racing up and down your body.

You wish you were there.

But it’s your illness parching your throat, the same illness that’s making your eyes feel gritty, and the light that hurts your eyes is from the fluorescent bulbs of a hospital room. In front of you, a television speaks a language you don’t understand, and there’s an ugly painting of fruit on the wall. You’d tell them that you never did like nectarines if you could find the energy to speak.

It’s not all wishful thinking though. Because Adam is sitting behind you, holding you in his strong arms, whispering in your ear tales of the Pharaohs and the Gods, and it’s his accent, as well as your illness, that’s sending chills up and down your spine.

You listen to his stories, and you listen to his plans, and you dream that they’ll come true, but you know the truth.

Adam will get to go to Egypt, sit on the desert sands when the sun sets behind the Great Pyramid.

You won't get to see it.
