Ruining the Night

When Tony
left for the store, everything was fine. When he returns with wine, the rack of
lamb is a charred black lump, the vegetables are mush, the sauce boiled dry.
The window is open to let smoke escape, the fire alarm is whining, with Abby waving a dishcloth underneath it to
make it stop.
He laughs,
she throws the dishcloth, along with a few insults, at him.
He
apologises when he sees tears in her eyes.
She apologises
for ruining their night, but later, with pizza and wine on the table, her in
his arms, he knows she didn’t.
