She never screams when she wakes.

No matter how bad the nightmares, no matter what memories that never happened speed through her dreams, she never screams. Habit, she thinks. Survival instinct during the year that never was, and again now – Tish and her parents need her to be the strong one. They need to lean on her, for her to tell them that everything is going to be all right.

Martha Jones, prophet twice over.

When it gets to be too much, she gets into her car, drives more carefully than she used to when she actually had reasonably priced car insurance and a No Claims Bonus. She drives clear across the country and ends up in Wales, standing staring up at a tower of water, unblinking, just waiting for him to come out.

He always does.

They talk, about what happened and didn’t happen. They talk about the Doctor, about their lives before him, their lives after him. Every so often, they get drunk together, and that’s when they do more than just talk.

She never screams when she wakes, but when she sits bolt upright, heart pounding, sweat pouring down her body, he takes her in his arms and she lets herself cry.

He never tells her that everything is going to be all right, and when it seems that her life is all about lies, she’s grateful for that.
