Daniel didn't want to
wake up. Waking up meant that he would have to get up out of bed, cruel reality
making itself known. Waking up meant that he would have to make his way to the
kitchen, put on the first pot of coffee of the day before making his way to the
bathroom where he would shower and shave. Then it would be back to the kitchen
for coffee that was nowhere near as good as last month’s, talking about dinner,
which was nowhere near as fun as it was last month, before heading to Cheyenne
Mountain for another adventure through the Stargate, which would never be as
appealing again.
Once, when he’d lost
the woman he loved,
Now, having once
again lost the woman he loved, it was a place he could scarcely bear to go, a
place where he kept expecting to see her, a place that was completely defined
by her absence.
No, Daniel didn’t
want to wake up. Much better to stay here in their bed, where he could close
his eyes and dream of the woman who once lay here beside him. In his dreams,
they were together, happy, raising Cassandra, as perfect a family as it was
possible to be. In his dreams, she made him the best coffee he’d ever tasted,
and they bickered good-naturedly over what to get for dinner, with Cassie
having the casting voice. In his dreams, she looked at him and smiled as he
wound his fingers through her long red hair, her eyes alive with love and
vigour and everything he’d ever loved about Janet Fraiser.
In his dreams, he had
everything he ever wanted.
But they were only
dreams.
