They stand in the hotel lobby, staring at one another.

“Ainsley.” His voice is thick, his face like marble. “What are you doing here?”

Pounding heart in hand, she approaches him, whispers the first words that come to mind. “I’ve made a huge mistake Leo,” she says. “I never should have left Washington. Or you.” He doesn’t move, doesn’t react, and she reaches out, lays a hand on his arm. “Is it too late?”

She tries, but she can’t read his eyes, and time elongates until he speaks again. “Yes,” he says, turning and walking away.

She lets him go.
