I went back to Over the Rhine.
In an effort
to stop the world from spinning, Kenny closes his eyes tight and takes a deep
breath. When he opens them, Joey’s expressive face is concerned, and not a
little scared, and, with shaking hands, he signs, “Say that again.”
The second
time might be harder to understand than the first, because her hands are
shaking and he’s watching through tear-blurred eyes, but the message is the
same, two simple words.
“I’m
pregnant.”
Then, “Are
you happy?”
He can’t
sign, reaches for her instead, grabbing both her hands in his, squeezing hard,
and she smiles in perfect understanding.
