It's over.

He doesn’t need to see the television announcement, doesn't need to read the last few hours worth of exit polls.

He lost.

He knows it from the funereal atmosphere of his campaign headquarters, from the finally silenced telephones, from the way Toby hovers around him.

It's over.

He's not going to be a United States Congressman, and since Inauguration Day, he's not the White House Deputy Communications Director either.

His life as he knew it is over, and it's time to start anew.

He doesn't know what to do, so he steps outside, breathing deeply.

It feels good.
