She gave him sunglasses when he was leaving Washington, along with a trademark half-smile. “Because your future’s so bright…” she’d begun, but her heart clearly not in it.

“Resorting to cliché…good job I’m leaving,” he’d deadpanned, a quip that had fallen even flatter.

She hugged him then, held on a little tighter, a little longer, than really necessary. He didn’t mind, not when he was holding her just as tightly, for just as long.

His future might have been bright, but up until that moment, he’d been picturing his future with her, and he didn’t want to let either go.
