Will’s used to seeing Commander Harper. Sensible suit, sensible ponytail, minimal makeup, nothing that makes her stand out.
Tonight, he’s seeing Kate. Hair loose in soft curls, lips and eyes accentuated, long black dress clinging to her like a second skin.
He attempts cool conversation, fails spectacularly, but he still can’t take his eyes from her.
As the night goes on, her smile warms, becomes brighter than the myriad tiny lights around them, and when he takes her home, the sky full of stars, he tells her she outshines them all.
She smiles a denial, but he knows it’s true.
